Lead Concerns Prompt Drinking Water Shut Off in Detroit Public Schools

More than any other segment of the population, children have the most potential to be negatively impacted by the presence of lead in drinking water. According to the CDC, “lead is a poison that affects nearly system in the body”. It can be particularly dangerous for the developing brains and nervous systems of young children. The CDC also states: “No safe blood lead level in children has been identified.”

That’s what makes the number of schools across the nation identifying high levels of lead in their drinking water even more concerning. Just after news that testing revealed elevated levels of lead in multiple Maryland schools comes news that Detroit is shutting off water to drinking fountains in all 106 of its public schools after high levels of lead were detected. The Detroit schools will provide bottled water and water coolers until a long-term solution is found.
