{"id":2204,"date":"2018-04-24T19:12:33","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T19:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/?p=1719"},"modified":"2018-04-29T15:01:53","modified_gmt":"2018-04-29T15:01:53","slug":"lead-contamination-concerns-chicago-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/lead-contamination-concerns-chicago-drinking-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns Surface About Lead Contamination in Chicago Drinking Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wqpmag.com\/report-finds-elevated-lead-levels-chicago-drinking-water?eid=216764492&amp;bid=2073471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>WQP<\/em><\/a> recently reported on a <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> drinking water analysis that turned up some eye-opening results about the city&#8217;s tap water. The analysis found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly 70% of the\u00a02,797 homes where water was sampled from over the last two years showed some concentration of lead in the drinking water<\/li>\n<li>3\/10 of the homes had lead concentrations higher than 5 parts per billion (ppb)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the WQP report, the Department of Water Management (DWM) said that Chicago complies with the EPA standard of addressing any test results over 15 ppb, and only 5.1% of the samples showed results higher than that level. The DWM&#8217;s procedure is to notify all residents whose water samples test over the EPA standard and work with those residents to find the source of the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Still, these results raise concerns for residents all over Chicago\u2014and across the nation.\u00a0Marc Edwards, an environmental engineer and professor at Virginia Tech, is quoted in the WQP report saying:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve done testing in New Orleans and frankly all around the country and honestly the Chicago results look pretty typical for a city with modern corrosion control and lead
