{"id":2293,"date":"2018-05-22T15:05:48","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T15:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/?p=2293"},"modified":"2018-05-22T15:07:09","modified_gmt":"2018-05-22T15:07:09","slug":"lead-concerns-chicago-parks-drinking-fountains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/lead-concerns-chicago-parks-drinking-fountains\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead Concerns Lead Chicago Parks to Shut Down Outdoor Drinking Fountains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With recent reports about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/lead-contamination-concerns-chicago-drinking-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elevated lead levels in Chicago&#8217;s tap water<\/a>, the news now emerges that the Chicago Park District plans to shut down and\/or remove many of the city&#8217;s 1,250 outdoor drinking water fountains.\u00a0According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/ct-met-park-district-continuously-flushing-water-fountains-to-keep-safe-lead-levels-20180514-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>500 drinking fountains tested safely for lead, were flushed this spring, and will be active this summer<\/li>\n<li>Of the 750 other water fountains that tested for lead, some of the drinking fountains in high-traffic areas will be turned on to run continuously to increase the safety of the water<\/li>\n<li>Water fountains with elevated levels of lead in lower traffic areas will be turned off or removed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Dan Cooper, director of environmental services for the Chicago Park District, quoted in the Chicago Tribune article: &#8220;not all city parks are being used the same way they were 50 years ago\u2014it isn\u2019t imperative to have a water fountain in every remote corner of every park. Many people who need water while at a park will bring their own water bottle with them,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a
