{"id":2753,"date":"2019-02-19T11:20:24","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T16:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/?p=2753"},"modified":"2019-02-19T11:25:54","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T16:25:54","slug":"epa-outlines-pfas-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/epa-outlines-pfas-action-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA Outlines Action Plan to Address PFAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/reports-on-pfas-water-contamination-continue-to-flow-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing number of reports<\/a> about drinking water contamination from\u00a0Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/pfas-drinking-water-contamination-increasing-attention-in-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attention in Congress<\/a>, and mounting pressure to address the issue, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/epas-pfas-action-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steps the agency is taking to address PFAS<\/a>. The announcement was made in Philadelphia, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philly.com\/news\/after-water-contamination-elevated-chemical-levels-bucks-montco-residents-blood-20181220.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PFAS water contamination<\/a> has been an issue in recent years.<\/p>\n<h3>Some of the key actions noted in the EPA plan include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Expand toxicity information for PFAS<\/li>\n<li>Develop guidance to facilitate cleanup of contaminated groundwater<\/li>\n<li>Use enforcement tools to address PFAS exposure in the environment and assist states in enforcement activities<\/li>\n<li>Address PFAS in drinking water using regulatory and other tools<\/li>\n<li>Develop new tools and materials to communicate about PFAS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Is the EPA doing enough, fast enough?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.philly.com\/news\/pfas-epa-plan-pfoa-pfos-water-contamination-20190214.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Inquirer<\/em> reports<\/a> that\u00a0EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler said at the press conference the EPA would &#8220;take the first steps towards&#8221; setting drinking water limits for PFOA and PFOS (the two most common forms of PFAS) by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/02\/14\/694660716\/epa-says-it-will-regulate-toxic-pfas-chemicals-but-not-soon-enough-for-critics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This <em>NPR<\/em> article<\/a> notes that critics say\u2014despite the action plan\u2014that the EPA continues to drag its feet on the issue. The article quotes\u00a0U.S. Senator Tom Carper as saying, &#8220;It has taken the EPA nearly a year just to kick the can even further down the road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2019-02\/documents\/pfas_action_plan_021319_508compliant_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>You can view the EPA&#8217;s
