We know that PFAS are dangerous substances that can be found in our water supply. But, further testing of these harmful chemicals shows that they may be more harmful than previously known. In an article published by Water Online<\/a>, a study on PFAS was conducted by scientists at Environmental Working Group and Indiana University. Their study focused on the specific PFAS compound, PFOA. They found that PFOA exhibited at least five carcinogenic characteristics. One of the leading scientists, Dr Alexis Temkin, Ph.D exclaims “This is worrisome, given that all Americans are exposed to PFAS mixtures on a daily basis, from contamination in water, food, and everyday products.”<\/span><\/p>\n

PFAS chemicals can stay in a human body for a number of years and can cause changes in the body such as hormonal dysregulation and a weakened immune system. Both of these changes could increase the risk of cancer in an individual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with health risks, it could also have major financial costs. According to Olga Naidenko, Ph.D of EWG, “Cancer causes staggering costs to society, and compelling evidence tells us that exposures to toxic chemicals in the environment are a significant risk factor.” In order to protect communities from the harmful risks of PFAS, it is recommended that PFAS are only present in one part per trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n
