For years the state has wrestled with PFAS, and she hopes that this will cause more federal action. She voiced her frustration with the lack of federal action, saying that states have had to create a \u201cpatchwork\u201d of protections in their absence. Civil leaders from New Mexico spoke to the Senate with hopes to spur federal aid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamogordonews.com\/story\/news\/local\/community\/2021\/06\/25\/new-mexico-feds-must-act-water-contamination-air-force-bases\/7777076002\/\">Alamogordo Daily News<\/a>, the chemicals that stemmed from firefighting liquids have yet to contaminate the local military base. Unfortunately, the PFAS have reached Lake Holloman, jeopardizing local recreation. The lake became contaminated in 2019, and has prevented the public from using the natural resource for swimming, fishing or camping. Locals worry for the health of wildlife surrounding the lake and how they may be affected by the chemicals. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
