Hotels ask their guests to avoid showers, pools are only permitted to be open if they are absolutely leak proof, and more. The rain levels in 2021 are less than 50% of what they were in 2019, the situation has become dire. Communities are unwilling to collaborate, as those who have some water are not able to share with their neighbors. Thus far transporting water to those in need has been a seemingly impossible task.<\/p>\n<p>One of the few bright spots in this tumultuous situation has been Wayne Jones who is called, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-08-12\/mendocino-water-supply-depleted-by-california-drought\">LA Times<\/a>, \u201cThe Santa Claus of Water\u201d. He is one of a few private haulers that California communities have come to rely on for their water. Some of Jones\u2019 customers have taken to calling his weekly Sunday arrival \u201cWayne Day\u201d. He drives 45 minutes several times per day to pick up new loads of water, and will likely drive farther as the drought continues. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
