Colorado endured three massive fires last year, burning over half-a-million acres. The fires were eventually quelled, but the real danger comes after the fire. Wildfires cause sediment and chemicals to leak into nearby water sources, creating long-lasting danger for communities. This dirty water can contain anything, from viruses to synthetic materials from homes. Any of those contaminants can cause serious harm to a person who drinks the water. The cost of restoring water quality after such a crisis is astronomical. Many smaller communities cannot afford these costs and instead shut off their public water.<\/p>\n

The community of Greeley was forced to trade water with a local agricultural company after shutting down its water intake from Cache la Poudre River. The town has spent more than $40 million while recovering from the 2020 fire. Officials are unsure when to expect conditions to improve, as the effects from some fires can last decades. A Public Health expert named Gina Solomon told KHN<\/a> \u201cwe may not have seen the worst of it yet\u201d. These Colorado communities are likely to reach out to the government for assistance soon, with little other recourse after the fires.<\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
