This year, the governor of Maine set aside $30 million for PFAS testing and treatment. The state is acting aggressively, a necessary attitude towards PFAS, which are resilient contaminants. Initial studies in the state demonstrated 200 contaminated water sources within the vicinity of a single town. The Legislature has come together, as well as a number of other departments, with the single purpose of protecting drinking water within the state.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is hard at work to approach this massive undertaking. A spokesman from the DEP mentioned to the Portland Press Herald that the job could take up to four years. Before investigating or treating any sites, they must prioritize first. Agricultural sites where farmers are still harvesting have a higher chance to receive favor due to their important position in the state. The PFAS were initially discovered on a farm in samples of milk, linking the chemicals to the drinking water. The aggressive strategy is a proper start to combat the “forever chemical” contamination, though the process of treating it will be long.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”CTA – PIONEER” _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#d2e2f4″ border_radii=”on|12px|12px|12px|12px” global_module=”3747″ saved_tabs=”all” collapsed=”on”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text admin_label=”HDR” _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Open Sans|700||on|||||” header_2_text_align=”center”]

NOW REMOVES ARSENIC!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb admin_label=”CALL-TO-ACTION” _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”]

PIONEER is the First of its Kind Whole-House Lead, Cyst & PFOA/PFOS Removal System and now PIONEER Removes Arsenic! Contact us to learn more about this revolutionary system.

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The state of Maine unites to fight back against PFAS with $30 million dedicated to study of the chemicals and filtration to protect citizens.

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
