Since then, testing has been conducted and the community has been forced to deal with the forever chemicals. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/wisconsin\/2021\/10\/12\/price-tag-sending-bottled-water-french-island-600-k-per-year\/6050375001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recent measure<\/a> to protect citizens from their hazardous water sources has been purchasing water bottles. The state has taken to providing water bottles to anyone living in the contaminated area, costing hundreds of millions of dollars. The current expected cost is $500,000-$600,000 per year, which may reduce their ability to perform remedial actions.<\/p>\n<p>Within the city, 553 wells have been tested, and 166 have demonstrated a hazardous amount of forever chemicals. It has been recommended that while the government works on a solution, citizens consult with professionals to stay safe. One hope for the community to fund long-term solutions is a pending lawsuit against several companies. These companies have manufactured firefighting foams containing PFAS that were used in the area and are a likely source of the contamination. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
