The community of Pittsboro discovered a dangerous amount of PFAS in their local river which provides drinking water to the entire area. In response to this, officials founded a task force with the goal of creating an action plan to combat this new threat. One member of that group was Katie Bryant, a former microbiologist in the community who had been affected by the chemicals. With her help, the task force created a list of short-term and long-term solutions throughout the peak of the COVID pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The long-term solution proposed by the task force was a strong one, but one that would take time. They recommended the construction of a water treatment facility to protect Pittsboro and other nearby communities. The only catch was that such a facility would not be put into operation until 2031.\u00a0 In the meantime, filtration systems have become the preferred method of securing water quality. As plans for a water treatment plant move forward, perhaps the Pittsboro area can find a way to ensure safe drink water for all residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
