How does a family live when their livelihood is directly impacted by these forever chemicals? Two farmers by the name of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/ABc-2C7ShS-a9VTNsUTA_rQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johanna Davis and Adam Nordell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bought a farm that they later discovered had been contaminated by PFAS. The previous owner had fertilized the land with contaminated sewage, meaning that all of their crops were also contaminated. The two decided to recall all of their products and cease operation immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This instance occurred within the state of Maine, which has been striving to prevent further PFAS contamination. What started as a bill to prevent companies from exploiting legislative loopholes turned into a movement to ban the forever chemical altogether. Naturally this has led to opposition due to the severity of the idea, but cases like Nordell and Davis demonstrate the danger of PFAS. They are living on the generosity of friends, with a farm that cannot be harvested and no solution in sight. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
