Since the turn of the century, PFAS have become a significant and public threat to water quality across the United States. PFAS, or per- and polyfluorinated substances are found in plastics produced throughout the world, and have the unique feature of taking hundreds to thousands of years to break down. This means that once these \u201cforever chemicals\u201d seep into public water sources, or even worse, the human body, they won\u2019t leave for a while. This staying power can lead to a number of health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

PFAS can result in increased risk of cancer, damage to the immune system, pregnancy issues, and more. These dangers are further worsened by how common these forever chemicals are, originating in fast food packaging, sandwich wrappers, pizza boxes, and other common containers. The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
