From issues during pregnancy to lower birth weights for newborns, it is essential that one remains aware of their water intake during pregnancy. However, it can be easy to grow complacent when you do not live in an area with widely-documented issues. When you live somewhere that has conducted significant testing and found contaminants in the water supply, you are ready to take action. From purchasing filters and bottled water, you are taking preventive measures to protect the child. However, these communities are only the ones where the contamination exceeds maximum contaminant levels. There will be plenty of other areas where there is contamination, but not enough to gain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/bh\/20233\/drinking-water-contamination-even-low-levels-affects-birth-outcomes\">public attention<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contamination of any level can be harmful during the course of pregnancy. While those living in highly contaminated areas are aware of the threat and take necessary measures, anyone on the fringe may not be aware. They may not be purchasing filters and bottled water to ensure clean drinking water, and the effects of the contaminants are still quite dangerous. Due to this, it is essential to have a water filter wherever you are. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
