The issue is that infrastructure is expensive, and most nations aren\u2019t eager to update what has already been done. The Romans had basic plumbing, but their systems certainly don\u2019t pass modern health standards. On the other hand, the U.S. built a robust water system that was ahead of its time. However, that system was ahead of its time around a century ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a modern understanding of contaminants and water health, we can recognize the lead pipes across America as a significant issue. The federal government has been hard at work to treat this issue, passing a bill for $15 billion to replace these lead lines. However, $15 billion loses its luster once the cost of individual replacements pile up across 50 states and a few million lines. The utility companies that own these lines would take on significant costs to replace the lines and suddenly it becomes a battle to maintain their bottom line. It is the homeowners that are caught in the middle, the most affected by the contamination and the least able to improve it. The most we can do is stay educated. That is where the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90991052\/lead-pipe-map-states-rank-drinking-water-service-lines-epa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA\u2019s contamination map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrates its value, showing citizens how their states fair when it comes to lead contaminants. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
