American lawmakers call out the efforts of the EPA as too little too late. As PFAS\u2019 hold on the U.S grows every day, the agency has taken several years to put together their final plan. Worse yet, the plan that they present at the end of 2024 will not be an immediate solution. Any actions taken by the organization will take several years to fully take effect, meaning that the nation will be almost half a decade behind the curve on this situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to criticizing the EPA\u2019s speed to combat PFAS, the lawmakers also call out the agency\u2019s leniency with chemical manufacturers. The group is composed of individuals across party lines all working with a common interest to see the nation\u2019s water quality improved. As is, the US is strangled by the forever chemicals, already being present in the blood stream of<\/span> 97% of Americans<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
