{"id":562,"date":"2016-05-26T15:31:13","date_gmt":"2016-05-26T15:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/?p=562"},"modified":"2018-04-27T20:52:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T20:52:23","slug":"high-iron-levels-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/high-iron-levels-drinking-water\/","title":{"rendered":"How High Iron Levels Can Have a Negative Impact on Water Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wateronline.com\/doc\/are-the-dangers-of-iron-in-water-being-ignored-0001\" target=\"_blank\">this\u00a0recent article from Water Online<\/a>, Virginia Tech environmental engineering professor Marc Edwards expresses his concerns about the potential problems that can come from high levels of iron in drinking water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edwards is quoted in the article saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWhat we&#8217;ve discovered in the last, say, five or ten years is a legitimate public health concern about having too much iron and manganese in the water&#8230; this doesn&#8217;t just look bad, it poses a significant public health threat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<h2>Problems Too Much Iron Can Cause in\u00a0Drinking Water<\/h2>\n<p>While the presence of iron itself in drinking water won&#8217;t necessarily make people ill, it can help produce conditions where water becomes more hospitable to contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards says in the article that iron can increase the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/dangers-of-lead-in-drinking-water\/\" target=\"_blank\"> leaching of lead into water<\/a>. <strong>He also says high levels of iron can negate disinfectants like chlorine, enabling bacteria to get into water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Bacteria in drinking water can cause numerous health risks. For example, legionella is a bacteria that can get into\u00a0water. Legionella can infect the lungs and cause Legionnaire&#8217;s Disease.<\/p>\n<p>Recent evidence supports this. Leading up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpress.com\/site\/president-obama-wqa-water-filters-flint-michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flint, Michigan, water crisis<\/a>, 87 residents were diagnosed with Legionnaires&#8217; disease between June 2014 and November 2015. That&#8217;s almost double the cases of Legionnaires reported in the county in the four years previous to that <em>combined<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Iron Levels Currently\u00a0Considered a &#8216;Secondary Standard&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>All this lends credence to the idea that the dangers of high iron levels in drinking water (which can\u00a0give water a brownish color) may be very real.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s a danger that many states and communities may not be effectively regulating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the Water Online article: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;the EPA doesn&#8217;t require that states enforce the agency&#8217;s set of so-called secondary drinking water standards because high iron and manganese
