Uncertainty around the quality of tap water leads many to opt for bottled water instead, though one study asks if that is truly better. Researchers from <\/span>Weill Cornell Medicine<\/span><\/a> in Qatar have published a study listing the potential issues with sticking solely to bottled water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One issue with select water bottles is the presence of microplastics in their water. Often these plastics are alongside chemicals designed to make the bottle more durable, though their effects within the water can be dangerous. In addition to this, the creation and disposal of these bottles creates a vast amount of waste that can negatively impact the environment around their manufacturing facilities and landfills. While bottled water is a step up for communities struggling with contamination of their public water supply, it is not a universal solution. The best path is to stay up-to-date on your local water quality and choose the best option for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
