Health organizations across the country have taken action to reduce the spread of PFAS, though this largely occurs at the treatment stage. Companies are still able to produce products with the forever chemicals, though with increased regulation. Oregon has become one of the first states to introduce legislation that outright bans any product utilizing the chemical.<\/span><\/p>\n

The push for the PFAS ban came from the Oregon State Fire Fighters Council<\/a>, who feared for fire fighters\u2019 safety. The president of the council stated \u201cThe exposure to PFAS in the foam we use to extinguish petroleum-based fires is tremendous\u201d and called for it to be phased out completely. This has led to a bill that proposes a two-stage program that will ban most products in 2026, and a few stragglers in 2028. The Oregon Environmental Council is scheduled to meet and discuss the ban within the coming weeks, and will hopefully take the first step towards a nation with no PFAS.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
