This led to backlash and lawsuits from utility and chemical companies, as they cited the cost of the limits as too high. The limits were required to be met by 2029, and noncompliant companies would have to contend with the government agency. However, one year later, those limits have been delayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a new administration, every issue is met with a fresh set of eyes. The Trump Administration tapped Lee Zedlin to be the administrator of the EPA. In his first few months, Zedlin has prioritized deregulation and been willing to work with the companies that the agency monitors. In this spirit, in May 2025, the agency has decided to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/05\/14\/nx-s1-5398061\/the-environmental-protection-agency-delays-limits-on-pfas-in-drinking-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revisit the PFAS limits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two of the PFAS types had their compliance dates delayed to 2031, and the other four were temporarily suspended. The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 prohibits the EPA from relaxing the contaminant limit, though the limit will be on hold until Zedlin revisits in next spring. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
