For years, the United States has been grappling with strategies and requirements to restrict the spread of PFAS. However, due to its popularity in packaging, the forever chemicals are causing issues across the globe. A story came out of certain areas in France where PFAS levels were detected at four times the standard amount. Due to this, communities like <\/span>Saint-Louis<\/span><\/a> have outright banned tap water due to its contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tap water bans have led to localized panic as citizens scramble to stock up on water bottles in their homes. Additionally, further studies have been reflective of America\u2019s experience, showing PFAS in water systems across the nation. The Saint-Louis tap water ban is slated to continue through the end of the year, with the goal of installing public water filtration systems before the public regains access. It places a ticking clock for France on finding a solution to the forever chemical problem, and raises the flag to other European countries. PFAS are here, and they will not remain quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
