Americans have grappled with the consequences of PFAS exposure for a long time, though even now, new health issues are being linked to the forever chemicals. A medical journal recently conducted a study on diabetes and its potential association with PFAS. After comparing 180 participants with type 2 diabetes to 180 without, the correlation became clear. Those who had type 2 diabetes had a far larger concentration of PFAS in their blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vishal Midya, one of the leads on the study, indicated that PFAS exposure correlated with a 31% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Midya told <\/span>Medical News Today<\/span><\/a> \u201cPFAS, primarily due to their chemical structure, can interfere with how the body stores and regulates fat, and consequently, how the body controls glucose\u201d. Further study will be required to corroborate the journal\u2019s findings, but it indicates yet another way in which the forever chemicals compromise our body\u2019s ability to fight disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
