Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure.
