Ohio EPA has announced $1 million in funding to help improve drinking water quality and reliability in the Village of Holgate. The project will connect the community to a neighboring municipal water system, addressing existing source water concerns and aging infrastructure. For water professionals, the investment highlights the importance of water quality monitoring, treatment planning, and long-term infrastructure solutions.<\/p>\n

Addressing Source Water Challenges<\/h3>\n

The Village of Holgate in Northwest Ohio is receiving a $1 million grant through the H2Ohio initiative to support improvements to its drinking water supply.<\/p>\n

Currently, Holgate relies on groundwater wells that have historically contained elevated bromide levels. Bromide is a naturally occurring compound that can contribute to the formation of disinfection byproducts during drinking water treatment.<\/p>\n

The project will install approximately nine miles of waterline connecting Holgate to the City of Napoleon’s public drinking water system. Once completed, the connection will allow Holgate to retire its aging treatment plant and provide a more dependable water supply to approximately 1,150 residents.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2028.<\/p>\n

The US Geological survey conducted research regarding different effects of droughts. In their recent study, they found that many prolonged droughts can cause a higher risk of exposure to arsenic in well water. Maine, New England, the Midwest, and the Southwest are all areas whose arsenic levels are regularly higher than the federal level allows. Although municipal water supplies are carefully monitored, private well water is not. This can be a danger to Americans because over 43 million people rely on private well water. A previous study revealed that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.9 million people are drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic, and this number may increase to over 4 million in case of a drought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increased levels of arsenic may be caused by a decrease in groundwater levels, which causes changes in water chemistry. There are also some human responses to droughts, such as using ground water rather than surface water, which may also affect exposure. The number of droughts is expected to increase as a result of climate change, exposing even more Americans to unsafe drinking water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Arsenic is highly dangerous because it causes a wide variety of health issues, and is odorless, colorless and tasteless - making it undetectable without a test. To help combat this issue, many states which are at high risk for droughts have programs to provide private well owners with arsenic tests. Although not all testing is free, these programs help make it affordable since it is recommended to test water every 3-5 years. By increasing awareness, doing additional research, and regularly testing water we can fight this
