Water accessibility in the American Southwest has struggled for a number of years. Between growing populations and declining water sources, a compromise needs to be made somewhere. According to the State Department of Environmental Quality, the compromise will involve a direct recycling of sewage water. A notion that on first glance will send a chill up anybody’s spine isn’t quite as bad once they consider the treatment process.
The deputy DEQ director makes the point that “there’s no new water”. Waste water is used, discharged, and then absorbed into the ground. From there it eventually evaporates into the clouds before falling again as rain. The proposed recycling will streamline the process to no longer need nature’s involvement while maintaining quality. So, while the initial pitch is not the strongest, it may be Arizona’s best path forward to clean and available water.
