Clayton county is one of many affected counties within the state of Georgia that have found dangerous levels of PFAS in their water supply. This discovery has a laundry list of implications for the county’s citizens, but a key piece is the cost. The federal government approved a $9 billion grant across the nation to assist in treating affected water systems, but it is far from enough. In Clayton county alone, the infrastructure changes would cost $450 million. Spread that cost to every similar situation in the nation, and we find ourselves short on budget.
Another element creating this struggle for communities is the lack of enforceable limits on these forever chemicals. While states wait for the EPA to put official limitations into effect, all they can do is create temporary solutions. Clayton county is a prime example of how a state can be acutely aware of their issues, but lack the means to truly fix them.
