Private Wells Near Military Bases Detecting PFAS

PFAS are difficult to detect in private wells, due to a lack of government-mandated testing. However, amongst those wells that have been tested, a pattern has emerged. In locations within the vicinity of an active or retired military base, far more private wells show signs of contamination. This is likely due to runoff from fire-retardant foams that were often stored in these locations. Unfortunately, until the update of PFAS contamination limits later this year, this discovery does not automatically trigger treatment.

This revelation came from a staggering amount of wells showing traces of the forever chemical. Almost 3,000 wells are contaminated, and these may just represent the tip of the iceberg. The test that uncovered this contamination was only conducted in the surrounding area of 76 military bases. There are 714 current or retired bases across the country, and with this early indicator there will be many more contaminated wells. This also does not account for the potential groundwater contamination or other public water sources. Military testing is scheduled to continue and uncover the depth of this contamination and begin treatment processes.
