Colorado endured three massive fires last year, burning over half-a-million acres. The fires were eventually quelled, but the real danger comes after the fire. Wildfires cause sediment and chemicals to leak into nearby water sources, creating long-lasting danger for communities. This dirty water can contain anything, from viruses to synthetic materials from homes. Any of those contaminants can cause serious harm to a person who drinks the water. The cost of restoring water quality after such a crisis is astronomical. Many smaller communities cannot afford these costs and instead shut off their public water.
The community of Greeley was forced to trade water with a local agricultural company after shutting down its water intake from Cache la Poudre River. The town has spent more than $40 million while recovering from the 2020 fire. Officials are unsure when to expect conditions to improve, as the effects from some fires can last decades. A Public Health expert named Gina Solomon told KHN “we may not have seen the worst of it yet”. These Colorado communities are likely to reach out to the government for assistance soon, with little other recourse after the fires.
