The City of Dayton, Ohio, has selected engineering and consulting firm Tetra Tech to design advanced treatment solutions for what is planned to be the nation’s largest dedicated facility for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, from drinking water.
The facility has a projected construction cost of $350 million. Under an eight-year contract, Tetra Tech’s engineers, scientists and technical specialists will build upon the company’s previous planning work for the city and develop solutions addressing legacy PFAS contamination in the Mad River Well Field.
The well field supplies Dayton’s 70-year-old Ottawa Water Treatment Plant, which produces approximately 96 million gallons of drinking water per day. The regional water system serves more than 430,000 people.
Tetra Tech will collaborate with Dayton Department of Water engineers, operators, technical staff and other stakeholders. According to the company, the project’s designs will be intended to meet PFAS regulations, modernize aging infrastructure and minimize long-term operating costs.
The project reflects the increasing importance of monitoring and protecting source water as utilities respond to PFAS contamination and evolving drinking-water requirements. Its scale could also offer valuable lessons for other water systems evaluating treatment technologies, infrastructure investments and the long-term operational demands associated with PFAS removal.
