EPA Makes Significant Strides with New PFAS Regulations

The Environmental Protection Agency prepares a wave of PFAS regulations to manage the manufacture and spread of the “forever chemicals”. Attorneys representing chemical companies brace for an onslaught of litigation in the aftermath of these changes. The EPA hopes to pass four regulations as soon as possible, the first of which will set a national limit for PFAS. They also hope to require drinking water utilities to monitor 29 other PFAS as unregulated contaminants. Third is the mission to collect information surrounding the discharge of PFAS from manufacturers involved in creating the contaminants. The final goal is to require chemical manufacturers to submit information regarding imported and created PFAS. This information would assist the EPA in detecting the sources of the 29 PFAS mentioned previously.

PFAS continue to become a more present issue in the populace. Known to link with health issues like cancer, high cholesterol and affecting vaccine effectiveness, PFAS are a hazardous presence. The primary goal of the EPA with each requirement is to deepen the understanding of PFAS so that they may reduce the danger they represent. Local health groups encourage the EPA to do even more to combat the danger, citing the organization’s approval of manufacturing a new PFAS. Robert Sussman, a representative of Safer Chemicals Healthy Families, demands further action from the federal agency. His statement to Bloomberg Law implored the agency to place further requirements on the companies producing PFAS. He, among other health organizations, await further action from the Biden administration to make good on its promise to control these ‘forever chemicals’.
