The EPA has been slow in many ways when it comes to tackling the nationwide issue of PFAS. For several years, the organization has been deliberating on a new federal standard for how the United States should handle these forever chemicals. However, while we are still waiting on their final decision in that matter, the EPA has taken some action. Namely, the EPA has enforced action onto the chemical manufacturer, Chemours.
Chemours is a spin-off company of DuPont, one of the largest companies behind the discharge of PFAS into Ohio water systems. The EPA has ordered Chemours to implement a sampling plan and strategies to treat and minimize their leakage of PFAS into the Ohio River. This follows shortly after a Ohio lawsuit against Chemours’ parent company, demonstrating that both the federal and state government are ready to take a stand for clean water. Hopefully their current and future actions will ensure that Ohio is able to recover from the continued spread of PFAS in the region.
