‘Forever chemicals’ pervade drinking water sources on Cape Cod, study finds

A study conducted by researchers at Harvard University revealed elevated levels of toxic chemicals in the public water in Cape Cod.  There were over 40 times more PFA’s than the state allows in the water. These guidelines call for routine testing of public water and sets a limit for the amount of ‘forever chemicals’ that can be present. Harvard scientists determined that the source of the PFA’s was from foam used to fight fires, which had been transferred into nearby watersheds downstream. Over 400 parts per trillion were found in 3 watersheds, and the state will soon begin to enforce a rule which calls for action for levels over 20 parts per trillion. A representative from the state’s executive office of energy and environmental affairs said that the state will work diligently with municipalities to address the chemicals.
