PFAS are called ‘forever chemicals’ due to resisting natural breakdown and existing within water systems for what seems like forever. This issue is why the contaminants have been able to effectively spread across the United States. Once they’re in a water system, it’s nearly impossible to get rid of them. Fortunately, however, some of the nation’s brightest minds are at work to change that.
General Atomics is a company that has been hard at work developing something called the PERSES system. This system is built to break down the bond that forms PFAS and its similar chemicals. In a public test that was shown to the U.S. Senator of Minnesota, the company was able to demonstrate the power of the system. It was determined to be effective, and is now in the process of designing a public solution that can be produced at cost. As the federal government rolls back regulations of PFAS, solutions like these may be the key to protecting the United States from forever chemical contamination.
