Boiling water is one of the oldest methods for treating contaminants, though it is inconvenient compared to modern technology. However, in particular moments of crisis, it can become necessary. Such is the situation for six towns in Massachusetts, who received orders to boil their water until further notice. The order came down after studies discovered E. coli in the local water system.
It is hard to grasp the inconvenience caused by such an order until you consider all the uses for water in the household. The order urged citizens to boil their water for cooking, cleaning, watering their pets, and more. It even urged caution to not accidentally swallow any water during showers, due to the danger of the contaminant. Otherwise they become vulnerable to health effects like nausea, headaches, cramps, and more. These recommendations are set until further notice, so citizens within the impacted towns must get familiar with a new way of life.
