PFAS Exposure During Pregnancy Linked to Teenage High Blood Pressure

PFAS are dangerous due to their longevity. This is known and often associated with the fact that their longevity means that it is difficult-to-impossible to rid water systems of the forever chemical without intervention. However, the longevity of PFAS also means that the consequences of exposure can appear later in life.

PFAS exposure during pregnancy has already been documented as having adverse effects on infants, though new studies reveal that the issues may arise even later in life. One study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that teenagers who were exposed to PFAS while in the womb showed a higher likelihood to develop high blood pressure. This can be an indicator for issues later in life with cardiovascular disease, and other illnesses. The study was widespread and thorough, though it only indicates a relationship between the forever chemicals and high blood pressure.

The danger arises in the time it takes to discover these problems. These health issues originate from PFAS exposure before birth, but only reveal themselves 12-14 years later. PFAS is all about longevity. They remain in your system, and even if the health issues are not immediately felt, there’s no telling when exposure is significant and could have lasting effects.
