Rhode Island Awaits Approval on Legislation to Combat PFAS

Rhode Island sees a light at the end of the tunnel, through legislation that will set a more strict limit on PFAS statewide. Now it all falls to the governor to approve or deny the motion. PFAS contamination has been an issue steadily rising into public consciousness over time, and now Rhode Island is ready to combat it. Another bill meant to accompany the legislation is still in limbo in the Senate. One representative voicing his hopes to see it voted on soon. A representative for governor McKee said that he would consider the merits of the legislation and decide on it accordingly.

Rhode Island has had a bumpy road on its way to healthy water. One year ago the health department attempted to set a standard contaminant level, but discussions fell through with the previous governor. The Senate vote is the furthest any state water effort has reached, now activists are holding their breath. Representative Walter Felag spoke to The Providence Journal about the need for new legislation. “Within New England only us and Maine are the only two that don’t have it. It’s about time we joined the crowd”.
