Analysis indicates that larger water utilities more often fail to meet the EPA’s current limits for the two chemicals it still plans to regulate, PFOA and PFOS. About a quarter of systems serving more than 100,000 people exceeded the limit on average, compared with roughly 8% of systems serving fewer than 10,000.
However, in the latest data release, some of the smallest communities show the most striking concentrations of forever chemicals in their drinking water. Hundreds of small water systems have budgets that may be too limited to cover the cost of removing PFAS without raising water rates, leaving them to choose between passing costs to customers or finding other options.
