WA increases pressure on Army over PFAS contamination near Yakima

Years after PFAS were detected in drinking water near Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Yakima Training Center, families are still waiting for water filtration systems. State officials express frustration with the Army’s pattern of slow or no release of information about the contamination.

Washington state officials have ramped up pressure on the Army since Gov. Bob Ferguson was sworn in and appointed Casey Sixkiller, a former EPA regional administrator, to lead the state Department of Ecology earlier this year. The shift underscores a renewed push for transparency and action on the issue.

For decades, the Yakima Training Center used PFAS in firefighting drills, allowing the chemicals to leach into the area’s groundwater. Frustrated families have voiced concerns about inconsistent Army communications, the status of drinking-water filtration systems installed on their properties, and how these issues may be contributing to rising electric bills and fluctuating water pressure.
