Water Test Returns Positive Results for Well in Portage, MI

In a recent quarterly water test of the Portage city well, officials reported that there was a low level of “fluoro-chemical” (PFAS) contamination in one of the city’s wells. In a news report from MLive, samples that were taken from one of the wells in the city of Portage tested at 16 parts per trillion. This amount is below the recommended EPA standard of 70 ppt and applies to both PFAS compounds PFOA and PFOS.

The city has been conducting these quarterly tests since 2018 when PFAS levels tested at 13 ppt. City officials such as Joe La Margo stated that the city’s water supply is tested routinely by the state’s Department of Environment. Along with ensuring the safety of the city’s water supplies the city tests the water regularly due to the federal Drinking Water Act.

Even though the PFAS level has risen by 3 ppt since 2018, Mr. La Margo stated “We’ll continue to monitor it but at this point there aren’t any concerns.”
