Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has announced a proposed water quality funding package aimed at helping utilities and rural communities improve drinking water treatment. The plan includes more than $100 million for water treatment infrastructure over the next decade, with $76 million allocated to grant and loan programs for rural communities and a one-time $25 million investment to expand Central Iowa Water Works’ nitrate removal facility. The proposal comes as the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers have reached nitrate levels that exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s legal limit of 10 milligrams per liter. For water professionals, the announcement highlights the connection between source water contamination, treatment infrastructure, agricultural runoff and the long-term planning needed to provide safe drinking water for Iowa communities.
